AITA for doing my job, even though the person involved is "nice"? For context for those who are not aware: I am one of the Furies of the Underworld. My job is to torment the damned. Generally my "clientele" are those who broke oaths or sworn duties, such as adulterers or deserters, but in this case the man in question committed a number of less specific but extremely serious crimes. The person I am referring to is a former king who, in addition to a myriad of other sins which earned him the ire of gods and mortals alike, cheated Death by trapping the god Thanatos in the chains that were intended for him. The experience was deeply distressing to Thanatos and his family, disrupted Underworld work flow drastically, and significantly worsened the charges brought against this already notorious man. It is only now, after decades of punishment by the hands of myself and my sisters, that the man seems to have turned over a new leaf. He has taken on a pleasant demeanor, is polite and respectful, and seems to have thoroughly reflected on his wrongdoing. Good for him, I suppose, but in my opinion and that of my employer, this change of heart does not negate the trouble he has caused in both life and in death. However, my employer's son, ever the idealist, has taken a shine to this man, and the severity of the ongoing punishment has become a point of contention, to the point where my employer's son is attempting to dispute the punishment. Am I the "asshole" in this situation if I advocate for denying the appeal? What do you think?

Time is strange in the Underworld as we're immortal and cannot tell whether it is night or day, so it is hard to say exactly. I do know for certain Thanatos was chained up in a dark void in Tartarus for in excess of a year, at least, and his mother and siblings were beside themselves.

...Yeah, that's fair. Time means something different if you're gonna experience a lot of it. Guess he didn't really cheat death in the end?

No, not permanently. Eventually the God of War took notice that no one was dying and was able to pull some strings to have Thanatos located, finally.

Huh, so. Like, even regular mortals weren't biting the dust?

Exactly. Death was unable to claim them. It was an ordeal.

Sheeeeesh, that's no good. But I can get why the son might see it the way he does, too.

That depends on who you ask. I find myself fond of him. Most of the time.

Well, in that case, I'll take the comparison whole-heartedly. Not sure what I'd pick in his shoes thoigh...it's a tough situation no matter how you slice it!

Sorry, but are you REALLY talking about Sisyphus?

Ah, so you are familiar with him. Yes, I am. Prince Zagreus is the one attempting to refute the punishment, which I think is not only a poor idea on because it sets a troubling precedent of pardoning the worst of Tartarus on "good behavior," which I think could be exploited by Lord Hades' somewhat bureaucratic structure, but also damage the Prince's personal relationship with Thanatos, which I know they both value. To put it plainly, I think he is an idiot.

Yeah, I kind of have to be with the family I come from.

There's nothing idiotic about believing that someone's capable of changing, or wanting to give them a second chance! But I hate to admit, there's a line between what's smart and what's prudent.

From what I remember about Sisyphus, giving him any sort of pardon would definitely not be prudent.

If you give that man an inch, he will most certainly take a mile, and the only miles I wish for him to have involve boulders.
