“Soldier, ma’am.” John replied quietly. “Served in Vietnam with the Green Berets—captain in Special Forces, Baker Team. Finished my tour some time back.”

He paused, a shadow crossing his features.

“Ran into some trouble a few years ago—now I’m serving time.”
