Amanda tilted her head, looking at him curiously. "You really mean that," she said, trying and failing not to sound shocked. "Sorry, I'm just…kind of used to most people doing something for me out of a sense of pity and doing a really bad job covering it up. Should work on assuming that so much."
'I thought you felt sorry for me.' 'I guess I thought the same about you at first.'.
The fingers in his curled, almost like she was going to pull back--but she couldn't bring herself to that yet, because it had just been so long since she'd been able to feel this. People touched her hands all the time, it had been necessary, but the lack of any sensation while she watched them lift and move her limbs always left her feeling like they weren't her hands. Even when she'd put her arms around Nick and could feel it down to her bones, the knowledge they really belonged to another woman had been impossible to fully dismiss.
But this…even if it was a dream, she could feel it, look down and see her own flesh, and it was… as a scientist she should have been able to find something that conveyed something far more logical, but the only word that came to mind was magic.
Thinking of the importance of using the right words, though, made something else in the back of her mind perk up. "You don't have to answer if it's too personal or just really rude, but…I don't hear many people in my time and place use 'cat' in that manner very much, not people around the age I'd guess you are. When are you from?"
