never heard of water purification tablets but yeah that seems like a smart choice. do they work on salt water to make it drinkable?

Depends on what's available in the time or place you're from. Lots just remove all the nasty little lifeforms in the water that could make you sick, but if we're assuming I have access to the stuff I do most of the time, then yeah.
