The unnecessary hill I would die on is... How about none. No hills, no dying. .. why would I want to die on any hill? Much less unnecessarily? What kind of question is that?! (Someone totally doesn't get the phrase) What do you think?

It's a figure of speech. 'To die on a hill' means that you are going to stand by your argument regardless of whatever counter-arguments are thrown at you, because your conviction is steadfast.

Technically it was a request but clarification was needed.
